Mike picked up his first camera as a young child, sometime in the
early 1970s. This first camera was an inexpensive Bakelite twin lens
reflex with waist-level viewfinder. His very first photos were of
the seagulls on the beach, shot on medium format roll film. Later in
that decade Mike learned to shoot and process 35mm film, but it
would not be until the early 1980s before he finally purchased his
first 35mm SLR camera, and this is where his love of photography
really began. Having been intimidated for years by the technical and
mathematical jargon printed in the photography magazines, Mike
finally discovered that the best way to learn to use a camera was
to
simply use it.
For the next 20 years Mike applied his practical skills, shooting
product and industrial photos as needed for two local manufacturing
shops by which he was employed. But as a creative outlet, he found
himself gravitating more toward portraiture and other forms of
photographic experimentation. In the early 1990s Mike discovered the
magic of stereo photography, and became affiliated with the National
Stereoscopic Society. His stereo photography projects include
traditional side-by-side pairs, anaglyph rendering, and polarized
projection. Several years ago, as a recipient of a Pennsylvania
Partners in the Arts grant, Mike produced his stereo projection
show, “The Oil Region
in 3-D,” which he still shows by request.
The advent of digital photography has renewed Mike’s passion for the
medium. Since going digital, he has experimented even more: with
long exposures, “high dynamic range” techniques, and even a somewhat
risky technique known as “camera tossing.” In addition to the
aforementioned subjects, Mike is currently shooting a lot of nature
scenes and adventure photography, chronicling his forays into the
wilderness,
usually by kayak.
Mike’s community affiliations over the years have included
participation in several local camera clubs, various art shows, and
teaching basic photography at the
Oil Valley Center for the Arts in Oil City.

Thank you:
To our many artists, volunteers, guest speaker, judge & building owner for making this years
show a huge success!
Sincerely,
